Explore Vanadzor By Visiting The Top 5 Tourist Attractions

After the capital, Yerevan, and the “culture capital,” Gyumri, Vanadzor is the country’s third-largest city. Karalis (or Karaklis) was the name of the city until 1935 when it was renamed Kirovakan by the Soviets. Vanadzor is the provincial capital of Lori, and it is via this city that practically all of Armenia’s northern highways pass. Let’s discover which of the top ten attractions in Vanadzor are absolutely worth seeing during your visit.

There are some locations in the world where you can feel absolutely safe and secure, such as your own house. One of them is Vanadzor. Vanadzor is made up of 50% green materials. Green mountains may be found in every direction, giving the impression of being in a green cradle.

The City Lake

The city lake is a nice place to feel the cold soft breeze after a long heated ride. It appears to be soothing, as it is surrounded by lovely willows with chairs beneath them. The Lake is one of Vanadzor’s most popular tourist attractions. You can rent a boat and go on a ride by yourself or with a small group.

Your children might blow large water bubbles, bounce on a trampoline, or try their luck at the shooting gallery. A café with little house-like cabins is also located on the lake’s edge. The lake is particularly beautiful as the sun begins to set. In Vanadzor, don’t miss the splendor of a sunset.

Museum of Fine Arts

Originally established as a branch of Armenia’s National Gallery, the Museum of Fine Arts was reformed in 1979 and given the status of an independent museum with its own collection. There are about 1,700 works of art, including paintings, sculptures, and drawings of various techniques (prints and decorations).

The Lori Museum serves as a gathering place for all art lovers in the area. Through its collection, exhibitions, and education, it aims to broaden people’s understanding and appreciation of art.

Church of Holy Mother of God of Vanadzor

It is because of this appeal that the city’s first name was given. In the 13th century, a church was constructed completely of black stone. The village was dubbed “Kara-Klis” by Turkic tribes, which means “black church.” The old church structure lasted until 1826 when it was demolished by a powerful earthquake. Later, a new church called “Surb Astvatsatsin” (“Holy Mother of God”) was built on the same site.

 Sanahin Monastery

Another notable Lori area site, two old monasteries – Haghpat, and Sanahin – are about an hour’s drive from Vanadzor. According to mythology, two famous architects, a father, and a son collaborated in the construction of the Sanahin monastery. However, after a disagreement, the son chose to create his own monastery. Sanahin is known for its magnificent “lace” cross-stones, each of which is unique in its ornamentation.

Exploring Vanadzor will give you a good insight into the history of Armenia and its city.
