Denmark is a small country with a rich history and culture that many of us are familiar with and enjoy – think Vikings, fairytales, and hygge, among other things. However, many people only know Copenhagen, Denmark’s capital, without realizing that this great tiny country has an often-overlooked little sister city, Aarhus, that will give you a distinct taste of this nordic country.
Aarhus is Denmark’s second-largest city, and while many people outside of Denmark are unaware of its existence, it stands out for its rich cultural heritage – not to mention the captivating historical Old Town, stunning modern architecture, incredible food, beautiful beaches, and a theme park in the heart of town!
At the ARoS Museum of Modern Art, you can get the ultimate Instagram.
The ARoS museum of modern art, particularly the Your Rainbow Panorama and Out of the Darkness shows, are not to be missed. There are nine different areas in total, all of which feature Danish works from the Golden Age to the present day. International artworks, such as film, sculpture, and architecture, are featured in the temporary exhibitions. This is our top recommendation for things to do in Aarhus.
Wander the streets of the Latin Quarter.
The Latin Quarter is a lovely, cobblestoned neighborhood with an abundance of quaint cafes, restaurants, and artisan shops. It’s the perfect area to go for a stroll, grab a coffee and a croissant, and take in the sights.
At Godsbanden, take a look at the city’s artistic scene.
With open workshops, studios, project rooms, theatrical stages, auditoriums, and dance halls, Godsbanen is a creative hub for the arts. It’s a fascinating site to visit if you want to get a glimpse of Aarhus’s dynamic cultural environment. It is housed in a former railroad freight yard
Take a tour of the harbor by boat.
The Aarhus SeaRangers will take you on a tour of the Aarhus Harbour. They have a variety of guided excursions available, including ‘Aarhus from the Seaside,’ which narrates the narrative of the Aros Vikings and the new Aarhus island. You might see some marine life, such as seals and porpoises if you’re lucky. Another alternative is to take a cruise to Tun Island, where you can explore the island and eat dinner, which was formerly one of Denmark’s largest.
Do Some Local Shopping
Aarhus is one of Scandinavia’s top shopping cities, with an emphasis on independent shops and vintage stores. Strøget, a pedestrian street lined with businesses of all kinds, is the best place to start.
Tivoli Friheden is the place to be if you want to get your kicks.
The Sky Tower freefall ride, which combines bungee jumping and sky diving, is part of Tivoli Friheden, a city-center amusement park. This is not a game for the faint of heart!
The city is full of adventure and beautiful places that you cannot miss while visiting Denmark.
