Last year, Athens International Airport (AIA) welcomed more than 28 million passengers, which surpassed the performance recorded before the pandemic by 10%.

According to the data, the total number of passengers that passed through Athens International Airport (AIA) in 2023 stood at 28,174,150.

Statistics recorded in 2019 showed that the total number of passengers that passed through the airport that year were 25.57 million.

The data

The data further showed that the statistics for Athens International Airport in 2023 surpassed those recorded in 2022 by almost 24% and those recorded in 2019 by 10.2%.

The total number of passengers that passed through AIA in 2022 stood at 22,728,668. Simultaneously, domestic international passengers also recorded an increase.

They surpassed levels recorded in 2022 by 18.9% and 26.4% and were also able to surpass levels before the pandemic by 13.3% and 8.8%.

The 2019 record was broken by Athens Airport in November 2023, as there was a notable increase in passenger traffic each month.

The Airports Council International Europe (ACI Europe) reported in October that AIA was one of the European airports that had seen the most significant increase in passenger traffic.

This was as compared to the passenger traffic recorded in the same month in the past year.

Passenger traffic

The passenger traffic of the airport hit 1.86 million in December alone, which was an increase of 17.1% in the same month in 2022 and 13.6% higher than the numbers recorded in December 2019.

The total number of flights on Athens International Airport last year had reached 241,604, which was an increase of 13.2% from 2022 and a 7.1% increase from levels before the pandemic.

Last year saw an increase in the number of both domestic and international flights as compared to 2022, as domestic ones rose by 7.4%, while international flights rose by 18.1%.

As far as 2019 statistics are concerned, domestic flights increased by 10.5%, while international flights went up by 4.6%.

Tourism

According to the Bank of Greece (BG), the tourism sector in Greece made a significant recovery in the first ten months of the previous year.

This was due to the fact that it managed to make a significant recovery from the damages that COVID-related restrictions had inflicted.

Moreover, the statistics that the central bank shared also revealed that the tourism receipts recorded from January to October 2023 were higher than all travel receipts that had been recorded in 2019.

Greek Travel Pages (GTP) had reported back then that between January and October 2023, the cumulative travel revenue had hit €19.6 billion.

This marked a prominent increase of 14.7% as compared to the statistics of the same period recorded in 2022.
