Figures have been revealed for summer tourism, meaning from the month of May to the end of July.

Consequently, they have revealed that almost 39.50 million overnight stays were booked in Austrian accommodation establishments.

These statistics were reported by the Agency of Statistics in Austria, which further indicated that this number was 6.3% higher than the number recorded a year ago.

Moreover, the figures for 2023 have shown a 1.7% increase in comparison to the pre-pandemic period.

The Director General of Statistics in Austria, Tobia Thomas, took to comments on these numbers.

He pointed out that when the summer season took off, there was greater demand for vacations in the country, as opposed to the last couple of years.

Furthermore, 70% of these overnight stays were attributed to visitors coming in from international countries.

Thus, more than 27.54 million people traveled from overseas to Austria, which was a 10.5% increase as compared to the previous year.

Overall numbers

Statistics Austria, on the other hand, explained that last year, the country managed to achieve a record of 12.24 million stays.

However, all these stays had been booked by residents at the start of the previous summer.

This year, this number went down to 11.96 million, which was a 2.2% decrease within the months of May, June, and July 2023.

Additionally, from May to September in 2022, around 77.89 million overnight stays had been reported, which was a decrease of 1.4% in comparison to the summer of 2019.

Meanwhile, resident guests currently account for 24.32 million nights spent in the summer of 2022.

On the other hand, non-resident guests spent around 53.57 million nights in various Austrian accommodation establishments.

Statistics for July

Statistics Austria went on to provide data specifically for July since it is the second-most important month of summer vacations after August.

In July of the current year, non-resident guests spent an increased number of nights in Austrian accommodation. This number rose by 6.9% as compared to the same period in 2022.

Consequently, the figure reached 13.83 million. But where the nights spent by residents are concerned, they fell by 2.8%, standing at 4.87 million.

The latest figures additionally reported that the number of people arriving at Austrian accommodations rose by 5.56 million in July of 2023.

This marked an increase of 5% in comparison to same month last year.

In the same period, the night spent by German residents surged by 4.7%. Visitors from other countries, such as Liechtenstein and Switzerland, also spent a substantial number of nights in hotel accommodations.

Similarly, travelers from Czech Republic indicated a significant increase of around 15%. Meanwhile, the nights spent by the Dutch decline by 1.5% in comparison to the month of July in 2022.

In the first half of 2023, more than 93 million nights had been registered. This figure represented an increase of 12.67 million nights or 15.7%, as compared to the same period in 2022.

As per statistics, the number of nights in 2023 was only 2.1% lower than the number in 2019.
