The Ministry of the Interior of Spain has provided the latest data about the traveler journeys to the country during the holidays.
As per the information, in the second phase of the Christmas and year-end holidays, the country is expecting a large number of journeys.
Specifically, the last few days of December and the early days of January are likely to bring in a total of 4,520,000 million long-distance journeys on the road.
In addition, these movements are not only going to include the initial journey, but those undertaken when travelers reach the final holiday destination.
Destinations
Some of the popular relaxation destinations for tourists have been predicted to be mountainous regions that offer winter sports for various enthusiasts, second homes, Christmas and winter-themed spots for travelers, as well as bustling shopping arenas.
The Ministry further disclosed that the peak timings for travel congestion are likely to fall within the evening.
As a result, traffic is going to be jammed between 6 pm and 11 pm for the next couple of days of the holiday season.
Meanwhile, major urban centers have been predicted to be congested as well in lieu of travelers beginning their departures from the 1st of January.
Traffic
Consequently, the Spanish traffic authorities have taken various steps to ensure that the flow of traffic remains smooth, safe, and orderly.
Several planning and regulatory measures have come into play, which also include the creation of complementary and reversible lanes.
As a result, traffic cones will be used during times when there is significant congestion on the roads.
On this note, the relevant authorities have made the decision to establish a number of alternative routes.
Moreover, it has been decided that all road construction projects will be temporarily halted.
The organization of different sports events and other activities that take up space on the road will also be restricted accordingly.
The restrictions implemented will be extended toward the movement of trucks, especially those that carry specific goods on certain dates, times, and sections.
The comprehensive initiative taken by the Spanish traffic authorities will persist until the near future or at least until the flow of tourists lessens.
The primary objective of this initiative is to ensure the safety of all the users on the road during this peak season.
Spanish Ministry
According to the Spanish Ministry of the Interior, it has hired professionals to execute all the relevant measures.
Consequently, specialized technical personnel have been brought on board to serve at Traffic Management Centers.
The Civil Guard, as well as employees working for maintenance companies have been hired as well, along with firefighters and personnel from the health sector.
These changes have been made in lieu of the rising number of tourists in the country.
As a result, traffic authorities in Spain have urged the citizens to prioritize road safety and responsibility and refrain from actions that could lead to tragic consequences.
As of now, various lives have been lost on the roads, with the current toll standing at 18.
