Travelers from Australia, Canada, and Brazil have changed their travel plans on account of the high costs in Europe. Consequently, they are searching for more budget-friendly locations to vacation in.

This news comes from the Long-Haul Barometer published by the European Travel Commission (ETC) to understand the changing course of action.

The Long-Haul Barometer is used to evaluate travel plans of visitors traveling long distances by conducting around 1,000 interviews in six different markets, which are all crucial for Europe.

These markets include China, Canada, Japan, Brazil, the United States, and Australia.

High costs

Where traveling to Europe is concerned, the survey conducted by the ETC revealed that the highest number of travelers who changed course came from Brazil.

Around 45% of the respondents stated that they chose to alter their travel plans due to the high costs of spending in European countries.

Meanwhile, 40% of the respondents from Australia made the same decision, followed closely by 39% of the people asked in Canada.

The survey further revealed that 12% of the residents from Canada have said that they are interested in exploring different areas in the region.

Moreover, 10% of the Canadians revealed that they struggle with time constraints when on vacation and thus, intend to take short-haul trips.

Among the overall Brazilian respondents, 13% plan on taking short-haul trips, while 11% said that they would want to venture to different countries.

Where Australians are concerned, 16% expressed the desire to explore other areas, while 9% said that they have previously made trips to Europe.

Statista

As per a report published by Statista, there are numerous interlinked factors that have driven up the cost of spending in Europe.

After the coronavirus pandemic, prices began to climb at unprecedented rates, and the spike further intensified after Russia invaded Ukraine in February of 2022.

Meanwhile, in June 2023, the inflation rate recorded by the European Union was 6.4%, which was lower than the peak inflation rate reported in October 2022, standing at 11.5%.

There is no denying that Eastern European countries tend to have more budget-friendly vacation accommodations and options as compared to their Northern and Western European counterparts.

Albania, Bulgaria, Hungary, Montenegro, Serbia, and Romania are considered to be some of the most economical destinations on the continent.

In addition, despite the popularity enjoyed by Croatia and Greece, they are affordable locations to visit, as compared to other nations in Western Europe.

On the other hand, France, Sweden, England, Denmark, Norway, Germany, and Switzerland are considered to be among the most expensive countries in Europe.

Average hotel prices

The pricing structures in different hotels across Europe are significantly diverse. Costlier cities on the continent can cost up to €30 per night, while affordable locations can go as low as €10.

Meanwhile, the overall average is recorded at €79.60 in all of Europe, but disparities may exist depending on how expensive a country is.

Switzerland is ranked at the top for offering the most expensive hotel stays, with nightly rates going as high as €145.48 on average.
