Statistics Denmark has published a report to reveal that in the first nine months of the current year, the country recorded more than 18 million overnight stays in various accommodation establishments located throughout Denmark.
This number reflects a decline of 385,000 overnight stays as compared to the corresponding period of the previous year.
The decline is especially surprising since the country registered a substantial rebound in the months of July and August.
According to Statistics Denmark, despite the fall in the number of vacation overnight stays in the first nine months of 2023, the figure has shown substantial improvement, as compared to 2020 and 2021.
Overnight stays
The reason why the overall numbers have declined is that there were 400,000 fewer overnight stays in the first six months of 2023 in comparison to the first two quarters of 2022.
Conversely, July and August recorded 15,000 additional overnight stays in the months of July and August, thus contributing to a rise in the figure in the third quarter of this year.
According to the data published by Statistics Denmark, in September of 2023, the figure for overnight stays in vacation homes went up to 2.2 million.
This reflects that there was little to no change in the statistics when compared to the same month of the previous year.
In the ninth month, Denmark registered a total of 2,224,508 overnight stays of tourists and residents in holiday homes, which is slightly lower than in September 2022.
Back then, the country recorded total overnight stays of 2,235,800.
Residents
From the numbers recorded in September of the current year, 459,200 were residents of the country. meanwhile, 1,765,300 people were international tourists on vacation in Denmark.
From all the foreign visitors that vacationed in the country, data reveals that people from Norway, Germany, Netherlands, and Sweden spent the most number of nights in Danish accommodation establishments.
The report from Statistics Denmark further revealed that Jutland recorded 83% of the total number of overnight stays in Danish accommodations recorded in September 2023.
Of this percentage, 34% were visitors to South Jutland, 7% traveled to East Jutland, whereas 26% came to West Jutland.
Moreover, North Jutland contributed 16% to the total number of overnight stays of tourists in the country.
Along with Jutland, the Danish Island, Zealand, welcomed tourists to its accommodation establishments, which accounted for 9% of the total overnight stays in September of the current year.
Meanwhile, Funen and Bornholm recorded 4% each of the total overnight stays.
2022
In the previous year, Denmark registered no less than 39.6 million overnight stays throughout the year, which provided a valuable understanding of the positive trends in the long term in the country.
It also helped explain the sustained attraction of the various experiences and locations in Denmark.
By the end of September 2023, the number of overnight stays recorded by the various accommodation establishments across the country stood at 18.8 million.
Consequently, experts believe that the figure will eventually rise in the later months of the year.
They have predicted a particular rise in residents and tourists alike in accommodation establishments in Denmark in the month of December.
