Liepaja is Latvia’s third-largest city and the country’s musical capital. After Riga and Jurmala, it is also the third most visited city in Latvia. The city is situated between the Baltic Sea and Liepaja Lake, with the Trade Canal connecting the two. Around 70 000 individuals have made it their permanent residence. Liepaja has a long history of cultural, artistic, and athletic traditions. Though the gorgeous beach is the city’s biggest draw, there are a surprising number of things to do in Liepaja that don’t involve soaking up the (though fleeting) Baltic sun. Travelers can gain an insight into normal Latvian living by visiting Liepaja, something they cannot receive by visiting Riga.
Peter’s Market
Peter’s Market, the largest market in Liepaja and the second-largest in Latvia (only behind Riga’s Central Market), is the first destination on our Liepaja itinerary. It consists of an open-air section selling fresh fruits, vegetables, and local produce, as well as an interior pavilion selling baked goods, traditional Latvian cheese, fish, and meat. It is located in the city’s center.
This is a fantastic place to pop by for a quick breakfast or to pick up some lunch things. In addition, unlike many open-air markets in Europe, there are few tourists here.
Hit the Beach
One of the best things to do in Liepaja is to spend some time on one of the best beaches in the Baltic countries, which is undoubtedly the most appealing aspect of a visit to this Latvian city. The beach at Liepaja is not only long and wide, but it also offers some of the world’s softest and whitest sand. While immaculate beaches may not be the first thing that comes to mind when thinking of the Baltics, you will find that the coastline here outperforms some of the more prominent European coastal spots.
Karosta Beach
Even if it lacks the amenities and fine swimming waters of Liepaja’s major beach, visiting the beach in Karosta is still a great option when you’re in the area. Former Soviet constructions that have washed into the water may be seen along the shore, which is quite weird. It is also possible to see the 1.8-kilometer long breakwater, which is one of the longest in the region.
Seaside Park
It’s time to move closer to the ocean and enjoy the big beachfront park after browsing at Peter’s Market. The park, which is located between the city and the beach, is large and beautiful, making it one of the greatest things to do in Liepaja.
There are numerous benches and walking trails, and various cultural and musical events are held here during the summer. For kids or the young at heart, there’s a performance venue, a few eateries, and even a mini-golf course! It is also the most beautiful park in Liepaja, and its size allows you to feel as if you are in the middle of nowhere while still being in the city.
